Roberta Angiolillo (ed.), Tzane Koroneos. Le gesta di Mercurio Bua, Edizioni dell’Orso (Alessandria 2013). ISBN: 978-88-6274-458-4.
This book represents the first modern critical edition of theΑνδραγαθήματα του Μερκουρίου Μπούα, a poem consisting of more than 4000 rhyming political verses by Tzane Koroneos from Zante. The unique extant manuscript copy of the text, preserved in the Biblioteca Reale of Torino (Taurinensis, Bibl. Regia, Var. 101), is the autograph written in Venice in 1519 A.D. The poem celebrates the deeds of the famous Mercurio Bua, commander of an army of mercenary Greek soldiers (‘stradiotti’) who served under the flag of Venice, France and the German Emperor between the late 15th and the early 16th century.
The work is therefore interesting as a historical source and, of course, valuable for further literary and linguistic studies.
The critical edition also comprises an Italian translation of the text and some indicative historical details.
